What is ESG?
Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) is a set of non-financial measures that contributes directly to an organisation’s risk management profile, sustainability development, and corporate social responsibility. It refers to the three main subject areas of sustainable development for measuring the risks and opportunities in business performance.

What is “S” in ESG?
“S” is fall under social pillar in ESG. Social about commitment in contributing to people and society, fostering diversity, inclusiveness, empowering equality, well being and prosperity while promoting a safer, fair, and sustainable workplace with highly empowered teams in making a resilient place for career development and sustain living.
Here are some examples of the social factors in ESG?
- Staff: Diversity, retention, training.
- Safety: Managing safe workplaces, measurement, tracking both of employees and customers.
- Supply Chain: Vendor satisfaction assessment, occupational health and safety management of suppliers, fair pay.
- Community: Managing relationships with the communities that the company operates in, including human rights, donation, community services and keeping work practices aligned with evolving community standards.

What is SDGs
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
They include 17 goals with 169 associated targets designed to end poverty, fight inequality, and stop climate change. And achieving there requires more efficient labour markets, greater financial stability and a more capable state.
The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Countries have committed to prioritize progress for those who’re furthest behind.

What is the relation between ESG and SDGs?
- SDGs are the global goals set out by the United Nations, whereas ESG is a rating system used by companies to measure their environmental, social, governance credentials.
- ESG measures how well a company is performing in terms of its social and environmental responsibilities throughout its supply chain and operations – as opposed to looking at the wider context of human rights,
- SDGs, are time bount i.e. they have to be achieved by 2030, whereas ESG focuses on long term solutions and is more high level than Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on specific targets around the world.
How social pillar in ESG can achieve goal in SDGs?

Social pillar in ESG is also called as Social Sustainability. It is because the action to achieve goal in SDGs. There are 11 of the UN Global Compact’s principal focus on social sustainability. The Goals specific as follows;
- SDG 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
- SDG 2: Reduces the zero hunger
- SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
- SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunities for all.
- SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
- SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
- SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
- SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
- SDG 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries
- SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production

Goal 5: Gender Equality

Gender equality, Goal 5 in SDGs is fall under social category in ESG. Since in March we would celebrate Gender Equality Month, Let have a some information about it.
Did you know that every year, Gender Equality Month is celebrated in March. The whole month is dedicated to celebrating the social, political, cultural, and academic achievement of women in the world. March is also important to raise awareness against gender bias in society. Did you know that, according to United Nations Development Programme, almost 90% of of men and women hold some kind of bias against women? This month is dedicated to eradicating those biases and teaching people the indispensable role of women in society.
The mission:
To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Why?
Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. But, today gender inequality persists everywhere and stagnates social progress. Women continue to underrepresented at all levels of political leadership. Across the globe, women and girls perform a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic work. In some countries, girls are deprived of access to health care of proper nutrition, leading to a higher mortality rate.
United Nations Perspective Toward Gender Equality
According to United Nations, gender equality, besides being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies, with full human potential and sustainable development. Moreover, it has been shown that empowering women spurs productivity and economic growth.

Why should gender equality matter to us?
