Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil

Description:

This standard covers the operations of entities / organisations in the oil palm industry along the whole supply chain comprising independent and organized smallholders, plantations, palm oil mills, processing facilities and dealers. It also includes grouping smallholders such as Sustainable Palm Oil Cluster (SPOC) and other group management systems. Entities / Organisations of palm oil producers must conform to a series of MSPO standard requirements in order to be sustainably certified. 

Main Components:

The MSPO (Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil) certification promotes sustainable palm oil production by ensuring compliance with key sustainability pillars, including environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic viability. Together, these pillars help ensure the sustainability of the palm oil sector while balancing ecological preservation, social justice, and economic development. 

The MSPO standard MS2530-2022 is divided into a total of seven (7) separate parts that contains requirements used to assess conformity cater to the differences in capacity and scale of the implementers of the MSPO;  

  • Part 2-1: General Principles for Independent Smallholders (less than 40.46 hectares) 
  • Part 2-2: General Principles for Organised Smallholders (less than 40.46 hectares) 
  • Part 3-1: General Principles for Oil Palm Plantations (40.46 hectares to 500 hectares) 
  • Part 3-2: General Principles for Oil Palm Plantations (more than 500 hectares) 
  • Part 4-1: General Principles for Palm Oil Mill including Supply Chain Requirements 
  • Part 4-2: General Principles for Palm Oil Processing Facilities including Supply Chain Requirements 
  • Part 4-3: General Principles for Dealers including Supply Chain Requirements 

The indicators for each user group vary, although the general principles are the same throughout. These are organised around five principles that cover:  

  • Management Commitment and Responsibility; 
  • Transparency;  
  • Compliance with Legal and Other Requirements;  
  • Responsibility to Social, Health, Safety and Employment Conditions;  
  • Environmental Protection, Natural Resources, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
